This vine is from a family of over 400 different species. The parts used are dried or fresh above-ground herb and flowers. Passionflower is beautiful.
It is used for insomnia anxiety, neuralgia and nervous headaches. At one time the FDA okayed Passionflower for inclusion in nonprescription insomnia remedies but in the late 1970's withdrew its support for lack of evidence regarding this herb's effectiveness. However, American Passionflower is widely used in Great Britain, and Germany. Those countries must not have gotten the memo.
This herb is effective to calm nervous tension and is mildly sedating. Native Americans used this herb to speed the healing of bruises. It has been shown to be effective to reduce the intensity of menopausal hot flashes.
Not for use by pregnant mothers.
